Kerr appointed Scotland women's team coach

The Scottish Football Association (SFA) have announced that Shelley Kerr will succeed Anna Signeul as national team coach after UEFA Women's EURO 2017 this summer.

Signeul, who has been at the helm since 2005, will make way for the former Scotland defender after the tournament in the Netherlands, the first they have ever qualified for. Kerr will then lead Scotland in 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup qualifying.

Kerr leaves her role at Stirling University, having become the first female manager in British men's senior football when she was appointed by the Scottish Lowlands League outfit in summer 2014.

A scorer of three goals in 59 appearances for her country between 1989 and 2008, Kerr coached Kilmarnock Ladies, Hibernian Ladies and Spartans in her homeland before guiding Scotland at the 2010 UEFA European Women's Under-19 Championship in FYR Macedonia.

She then took over at Arsenal in 2013, winning two FA Women's Cups during her 16-month tenure and gaining UEFA Women's Champions League experience.

"We have a great group of players and my goal is to continue the good work and sustain the level of success that the team has achieved in recent years," said Kerr, who during a 20-year playing career represented a number of sides including Kilmarnock, Hibernian, Doncaster Rovers Belles and Spartans, winning every major club honour in Scotland.

Scotland will play England, Portugal and Spain in UEFA Women's EURO 2017 Group D in July and discover their World Cup qualifying opposition on 25 April.
