Spain edge past hosts Norway and into final

María Caldentey and MartaTurmo scored within the final 19 minutes as Spain booked their place in Sunday's UEFA European Women's Under-19 Championship final at the expense of the hosts.

Norway had ambitions of a perfect final at the Ullevaal but those were dashed when Caldentey, standing on the edge of the box, kept her poise as the ball ballooned up to her following a corner. She met it with a firm first-time shot that evaded Cecilie Fiskerstrand's dive to her right. The hosts stepped up in search of an equaliser, providing a few scares, but Spain held firm and Turmo made sure with a late header.

So ends Jarl Torske's dream of ending his 14-year career as Norway coach in style. There were always signs, though, as the game in Jessheim kicked off in conditions more suited to Mary Shelley's Frankenstein than a Hans-Christian Andersen fairy tale. With rain lashing down and fork lightning illuminating foreboding clouds, the first half was nervy, tentative – by the interval the teams had mustered a solitary shot on goal between them.

The second half could not have been more different – brighter skies brought brighter play. Spain enjoyed much of it, and could so easily have forged ahead within eight minutes of the restart when a Norway lapse allowed Caldentey a run on goal. She delayed perfectly before releasing Nahikari García but Fiskerstrand was alert to the danger, dashing off her line to block at the diminutive forward's feet.

The game opened up, but the best chances were falling to Spain and Caldentey made no mistake when she got a glimpse of goal. Norway could not find a way back, Turmo adding to their disappointment.

We are very happy. We played very well against a good Norway side and the players knew just what they were doing out on the pitch. Norway basically didn't create any opportunities and if you are leading and score in the 94th minute from a corner it shows the ambition the team has. This was the players' victory – they completely deserved the win.

I stood in the dugout in the first half, despite the rain. I'm trying to send them a message that I am with them and there to help them. I cannot go on the pitch but if I could I would.

It was a very disappointing performance but a lot of credit for that goes to the Spanish team. They were much more dangerous. We couldn't put together good combinations, we lacked movement, passing – we kept losing the ball. We never threatened them really. We were 90 minutes from a final at Ullevaal but dealing with the pressure that brings is a lesson the players have to learn.

It was my last game, a sad ending to my under-19 career. Like the players, I hoped to finish with a final at home and thought we could. At our best, this team has brought me a lot of pleasure, and played such good football. I really believed we could reach the final and even be champions. But this is a good Spain team.
