Midfielder-cum-striker Virginia Torrecilla said it was already time to turn the page on a story that is not over yet as she took stock of Spain's late heartbreak in the final of the 2012 UEFA European Women's Under-19 Championship. One of 13 players in Spain's squad who will still be eligible next year, the 17-year-old exits proud but determined to go one better next time.
UEFA.com: How proud are you of this performance?
Virginia Torrecilla: We put in a very complete performance. We knew we had to fight hard and that's how it turned out. I'm really proud of my team-mates because at no time did they let their heads drop. It's been a European Championship that always seemed in our grasp but unfortunately in the end it slipped away from us.
UEFA.com: What did your coach, Ángel Vilda, say to you in the dressing room at the end of the game?
Torrecilla: Ángel said he was incredibly proud of us. He said we deserve to win the trophy. He's going to remain in charge of the team and he's going to keep cheering us on as he always does.
UEFA.com: What's next for this team?
Torrecilla: We can already start to turn the page on this story. The game is over and we've come second; second in Europe, though, and that's no mean feat.
UEFA.com: Did the humid conditions have an impact on the outcome?
Torrecilla: It's just as hot as this in Madrid and Spain. It's very tough but we've been training every day, quite early in the evening to get used to these conditions – it wasn't a factor.
UEFA.com: What was your verdict on the Swedish team?
Torrecilla: The Swedish team are a very tough bunch, full of tough players. We thought we might be able to play the ball around them but they really worked hard. I'd like to congratulate them on their victory.
