Denmark's Jensen sees room for improvement

Julie Jensen paid tribute to her team-mates after Denmark overcame Romania 1-0 to take an early grip on Group B. But the midfield linchpin strives for perfection and is determined to raise her own game against UEFA European Women's Under-19 Championship hosts Turkey on Thursday.

"Against Romania I think we did a really good job. We played really well in the first half and they had a lot of chances in the second," she said. "But we scored and the luck was with us. On a personal level, my performance was OK but I want to play better next time round."

Mindfully nurtured by Søren Randa-Boldt, Denmark are united by belief, camaraderie and a never-say-die attitude which runs fervently throughout the squad. "I share a room with Luna [Gewitz] – she is so nice," said Jensen. "Søren is a very good coach and he wants us to always give our best. After the Romania game he told us we did a great job and fought till the end. He was very happy."

Turkey will provide a stern examination of Denmark's resolve and Jensen reflected on the game with studious caution. "Of course, every team here is good and it will be a very tough match," she said. "They have some quick players up front and we will have to be careful. I really want to get to the semi-finals but it's about taking one step at a time."

For the Brøndby IF teenager, the transition from club to country is simplistically smooth and a privilege that fills her with great pride. "It's just another football game. But just like playing for Brondby, we try to win every game," she said. "It's fun to play for the national team and I'm very proud. We have played many big matches so I'm very prepared for the tournament having also trained with my club."
