The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia's maiden UEFA tournament has garnered fair interest in Skopje and Kumanovo, but perhaps none more famous than national hero Darko Pančev.
The ex-FK Crvena Zvezda and FC Internazionale Milano favourite was at tournament headquarters on Friday, and admitted he had been won over by the quality on display thus far. "I follow the competition and I'm definitely going to see the final on Saturday," Pančev told UEFA.com. "It is very interesting to see young girls playing good football, make good moves and fight to get the ball. It has not always been the way for Macedonian women's football.
Pančev's illustrious career took him to Serbia, Italy, Austria, Germany and Switzerland but, now back in his homeland where he runs a bar, he takes a keen interest in the grassroots. "The organisation of the UEFA European Women's Under-19 Championship represents a commitment to developing football in Macedonia, not only women's football but for the game as a whole," said the 1990/91 Golden Boot winner. "It helps bring football to a higher level in terms of quality. I am delighted the championship is being played here."
