Late goals from Sofia Jakobsson and Jenny Hjohlman helped Sweden seal a dramatic victory over Iceland, propelling the former champions to second spot in Group B.

Goal drought
With just one goal in their last four competitive games, Calle Barrling's team – beaten 3-0 by England in their first game – entered the contest low on confidence and it was no surprise to see Iceland seize the early initiative. Arna Sif Asgrimsdottir punished the Swedes on the stroke of half-time before the yellow shirts stirred to life, turning the contest on its head with two goals in the final 13 minutes. The win takes the 1999 champions to within a point of the group summit, while Iceland are bottom and must beat table-topping England on Sunday to have a chance of reaching the last four.

Thorvaldsdottir run
Iceland captain Fanndís Fridriksdóttir showed her team the way by firing a powerful free-kick against the post on 14 minutes as Ólafur Thór Gudbjörnsson's charges piled on some early pressure. Winger Berglind Thorvaldsdottir then had the Sweden coaching staff bellowing orders at their defenders after she danced past two static players before failing to beat goalkeeper Susanne Nilsson.

Asgrimsdottir header
Sweden had to wait until 33 minutes for their first sight of goal, Jennifer Egelryd and Antonia Göransson combining to set up Jakobsson, only for the Umeå IK forward to shoot wide. The lively Elisabet Lisa Klinga then saw two left-footed strikes flash narrowly off target, but just as it looked like Sweden were getting on top Iceland struck, Asgrimsdottir heading in Fridriksdóttir's free-kick two minutes into first-half added time.

Superior fitness
Making only their second appearance in a U19 finals, Iceland looked capable of clinching their first win, yet Sweden's superior fitness ultimately told. Goalkeeper Birna Berg Haraldsdottir foiled Jakobsson as Iceland began to tire, but there was little she could do to keep out the striker's calm finish after she had been sent clear by substitute Olivia Schough. The strength of Sweden's bench was evident late on, with Hjohlman stepping into the fray and heading a winner in off the post two minutes from time, sparking wild celebrations.
