2006: Isabel & Monique Kerschowski

It is not unique for twins to be in the same club side or even national team, but for both to score in the final of a major competition is something special.

Monique and Isabel Kerschowski were both born on 22 January 1988 in Berlin, have come up the ranks at BSC Marzahn, joined 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam in 2005 after making their competitive debuts for Germany on 26 April of that year in a UEFA European Women's Under-19 Championship qualifier against Sweden, and were in rich goalscoring form to ensure their nation's place in the 2006 finals. And it was in that tournament in Switzerland that they proved their mutual worth.

Isabel, who unlike her sister had played regularly for Potsdam the previous season, was the first to shine with a Player of the Match performance in the 2-0 win against Denmark, but neither had found the target by the end of the group stage. That all changed in the semi-final against holders Russia.

Both had played a year earlier in the last-four loss to the same opposition in Hungary but in a reversal of 12 months before Isabel started and Monique was on the bench. It was 0-0 at the break, but then Monique came on to partner her sister in attack and within five minutes she had added to fellow substitute Ann-Christin Angel's goal. That raised the bar for Isabel and so with 18 minutes left she produced a solo effort to complete a 4-0 success. Coach Maren Meinert hinted at sibling rivalry with her post-match comment: "I am glad both Kerschowskis scored; otherwise there is trouble!"

The pair started the final against France, Isabel up front and Monique on the right. The former took full advantage of her spearhead role on 13 minutes with a superb acrobatic volley. Early in the second half she struck again, set clear by Nadine Kessler and rounding advanced goalkeeper Véronique Pons. So now Monique had to respond, and with a quarter of an hour left her shot was deflected in, though Isabel − who hit the post when going for a hat-trick − took her second Player of the Match award.
