Sweden hold nerve to see off England

Dramatic spell
Fors kept her nerve to score from the spot on 63 minutes, cancelling out Toni Duggan's early goal, but then forced her team-mates to endure a nervous final 24 minutes when she was needlessly sent off. England went all out attack, with Jordan Nobbs denied by the frame of the goal late on but Sweden held on to seal second place in Group B and a last-four spot against Italy. Finalists last year, England are out.

Duggan opener
Mo Marley's team came into the game knowing they needed to win to go through to the semi-finals, and they began with real purpose, interchanging positions and biting at Swedish heels when not in possession. Nobody more so than Duggan and she soon had her reward. A long ball out of the Swedish defence appeared innocuous enough, but Sweden captain Petronella Ekroth failed to deal with it and Duggan pounced, firing low under goalkeeper Nina Fellbrant.

Asllani effort
England had also taken an early lead against Scotland on Thursday, only to concede almost immediately – it was a lesson learned. Today they kept their composure and Duggan almost made it 2-0 moments later, the angle just too acute as her effort slid beyond the far post. Sweden were struggling to find their rhythm, though Kosovare Asllani was a notable exception. The Sweden No10 has been suffering from fatigue, but was lively throughout at the Complexe Sportive Guy Drut and provided a chink of light from nowhere on the half-hour, rattling the upright from eight metres after being teed up by Emmelie Konradsson.

Fors dismissal
Sweden were rejuvenated. It took a terrific save from Rebecca Spencer to deny Sofia Jakobsson soon after and as news filtered through that Germany were leading 5-0 at half-time against Scotland, meaning Calle Barrling's side needed to gain a point, they upped the ante. Fors went close soon after the restart and the pressure told just after the hour when Asslani was brought down by Gilly Flaherty following a jinking run. Fors converted, wrong-footing Spencer though her joy was short-lived as she was soon dismissed after earning a second yellow card for a foul on Jessica Clarke. England drove forward but there was no way through as Sweden held firm.
