Article body
Denmark look in a strong position to reach the quarter-finals of the 2002 FIFA Under-19 Women's World Cup after a narrow 2-1 victory against Nigeria lifted them to second place in Group A behind hosts Canada.
Gajhede Knudsen inspiration
The European side had the better of the opening exchanges in Edmonton's Commonwealth stadium, creating most of the clear-cut chances, as they searched for the victory they needed after their Sunday loss against the Canadians. Mariann Gajhede Knudsen was the main inspiration for Denmark, conjuring up a number of openings.
Rasmussen double
And it was Gajhede Knudsen that made the first goal, finding Johanna Rasmussen with a long pass in the 28th minute, and the striker turned and shot past Nigerian goalkeeper Francisca Agbara. Two minutes after half-time, Rasmussen was on target again. Sandra Jensen's shot was parried by Agbara, and Rasmussen pounced to put away the loose ball. Nigeria, who drew their opener against Japan, pulled one back with 14 minutes left through Olushola Oyewusi, but Denmark held out to secure the points.
Draw needed
After the game, Danish coach Per Rud admitted that Nigeria nearly denied his team victory, saying: "After going ahead 2-0, it's unforgivable to play the way we did for the final 20 minutes. It would have been terrible to lose or draw that match." However, his side are now likely only to need a draw to stay in the competition when they play their final group match on Thursday against Japan - whose loss against Canada sent the hosts through to the last eight.
