Article body
France recovered from their opening-day defeat against Germany in the FIFA Under-19 Women's World Championship to beat Mexico 2-1, with goals from Elodie Ramos and Camille Abily.
Lead for Mexico
Mexico, also going into the match off a Saturday loss, actually took the lead on the quarter-hour in Vancouver's Swangard stadium, Guadalupe Worbis taking full advantage after intercepting a back pass from French defender Sandrine Dusang. Worbis' first shot was saved by France goalkeeper Bérangère Sapowicz, but the Mexican striker gave her opposing No1 no chance with her follow-up effort for her second goal of the tournament.
France equalise
The lead was short-lived, though, Ramos herself intercepting a loose back-header six minutes later ahead of Mexican goalkeeper Ladron de Guevra to loft the ball into the goal. With France on top, Mexico had defender Michell Rico sent off in the 36th minute for violent play.
Ramos creates winner
And within two minutes, France were ahead. Ramos, having a great game, beat the Mexican defence and cut the ball back for Abily to shoot home from close range. France were able to coast home after this, and know victory against Brazil on Thursday would confirm a quarter-final place, and may even be able to afford a draw. French coach Bruno Bini said after the game: "This was a more than important win for us."
