UEFA women's football development ambassador Lotta Schelin has hailed the inclusion of Mariam Abdulai Toloba's effort in UEFA's Goal of the Season competition.
Abdulai Toloba's spectacular volley – reminiscent of Dennis Bergkamp's iconic goal against Argentina at the 1998 FIFA World Cup according to one observer – came in Belgium's 5-0 defeat of Wales in a UEFA European Women's Under-17 Championship qualifier last October. All the more remarkable is the fact she scored it less than a month after turning 15.
"It's great for women's and youth football for this goal to have been acknowledged as one of the ten nominees for the most beautiful goal," said Sweden and Lyon forward Schelin. "It's amazing to see these young girls developing and showing off these technical skills. There are so many talented girls and it's great to see them making their mark. Hopefully by highlighting their talents, we can inspire more young girls to participate in football."
