Eight-goal Germany overwhelm Iceland

Germany claimed third place in the UEFA European Women's Under-17 Championship with an emphatic victory against Iceland.

Hat-tricks from Lina Magull and Annabel Jäger, plus a cheeky strike from Sara Däbritz and a Melanie Leupolz free-kick, guaranteed Germany maintained their impressive competitive record at this level, having won 26 of their 29 games and lost just two. Replies from Telma Thrastadróttir and substitute Aldís Kara Lúdvíksdóttir gave Iceland some consolation on a tough afternoon for the final-tournament debutants.

Having suffered the heartache of a penalty shoot-out defeat by France in Thursday's semi-final, Germany came out all guns blazing and signalled their intent after seven minutes when Däbritz tried her luck with a 20-metre free-kick which Unnbjorg Jona Omarsdottir got down well to parry.

However, five minutes later Däbritz opened the scoring after Magull's pass sent her free down the left. Spotting a gap, Germany's No10 cleverly looped a cross-cum-shot over the Iceland goalkeeper. The two-time winners of this competition continued to pile forward and Magull doubled the lead on the quarter-hour mark, her low shot from the edge of the area deceiving Omarsdottir.

Bar Glódís Perla Viggosdóttir's header from Sandra Maria Jessen's corner, it was one-way traffic and the scoreline could have been greater had it not been for a number of smart saves from Omarsdottir. Ralf Peter's side inevitably added another in the 26th minute, though, when Jäger lofted in a diagonal effort from the right before doubling her tally on the cusp of half-time with a curling effort over the outstretched Omarsdottir.

Magull twisted the knife further seconds later when she was first to react after Iceland's No1 parried Däbritz's shot following a well-worked set piece. After the interval, Germany showed no mercy and, when Svava Ólafsdóttir fouled the tricky Linda Dallmann, Magull stepped up to complete her hat-trick from the penalty spot.

Set free down the right, Thrastadróttir then coolly fired past Meike Kämper, a half-time substitute, as Iceland attempted a fightback. Yet Germany continued to press, Jäger completing her own treble on 67 minutes with a confident left-footed finish, swiftly followed by Leupolz's well-placed free-kick 60 seconds later. Despite those blows, it nonetheless fell to Lúdvíksdóttir to have the last word in added time as she powered in a shot from the right which restored a little pride to Iceland's ranks as they left the tournament.
