Long career
The 33-year-old, who recently signed for UEFA Women's Cup semi-finalists Olympique Lyonnais from Djurgårdens IF FF, has long been hailed as one of the best goalkeepers in the game ever since helping Norway win the 1995 FIFA Women's World Cup and 2000 Olympic gold. But she has decided to miss the 2008 Olympics and UEFA WOMEN'S EURO 2009™, having been ever-present for the World Cup semi-finalists last autumn.
Trying other things
"I have been in the national team for so many years, and think I have done and experienced all I can there, so now I am only motivated to play down here and do the best I can for Lyon," Nordby, who is to study to become a teacher, will quit football completely when her Lyon contract expires in 2009. "Another Olympics is obviously tempting, but I have been there twice before and think it's important to try other things," she added. "I had really made my mind up to retire from football, but took the offer to play in Lyon when it came."
