Located near the Italian and French borders, Sion's landmarks include two hilltop fortifications: the Basilique de Valère and Tourbillon Castle. With the first local settlements dated at around 6200 BC, Sion is also one of Europe's most significant prehistoric sites.

Used mostly for football matches, Stade de Tourbillon is a multi-purpose facility which is home to Swiss Super League club Sion. Named after the medieval castle that overlooks the city, it was opened in 1968 before being renovated in 1989. The stadium has hosted a number of Switzerland men's matches, including one in UEFA EURO 2020 qualifying, along with friendly games between Japan and Ivory Coast, and Algeria and Armenia. In 2014, it played host to Sion Sous Les Étoiles, a music festival featuring Patrick Bruel and Brice Conrad.
