Chelsea and Real Madrid have been paired in the same group for the third season in a row as they begin their 2024/25 UEFA Women's Champions League campaigns at Stamford Bridge.

Group B also contains Twente and Celtic.

The two teams also met on Matchday 1 last season. An Olga Carmona double for Madrid either side of headers from Niamh Charles and Sam Kee ensured a draw in Spain on 15 November 2023.

Chelsea claimed the three points at Stamford Bridge on Matchday 5. All three goals came in the second half, a Mylène Chavas own goal ultimately separating the teams.

Chelsea were victorious in the first-ever meeting between the two sides on 23 November 2022 thanks to second-half goals from Sophie Ingle and Erin Cuthbert at Kingsmeadow.

The reverse fixture in Madrid two weeks later ended all square, Caroline Weir putting the hosts in front in the first half before an own goal from goalkeeper Misa Rodríguez levelled the break.

Chelsea's sole Women's Champions League final appearance, in 2021, ended in defeat against Spanish opposition, a 0-4 loss to Barcelona in Gothenburg.

The same side eliminated Chelsea at the semi-final stage in the last two editions of the Women's Champions League, 1-2 on aggregate on both occasions.

Chelsea have won two of their last three fixtures against teams from Spain, having been without a victory in the previous four.

Runners-up in 2021, Chelsea have reached the semi-finals or better in five of the last seven seasons.

In 2023/24 the Blues claimed the Women's Super League title for the fifth season in succession and seventh overall. A side managed by Emma Hayes won the title on goal difference after finishing level on points with Manchester City.

This season, they began their Super League title defence with victories over Aston Villa (1-0) and Crystal Palace (7-0). Those eight goals were scored by seven different players, with only Guro Reiten finding the net twice.

Chelsea have lost just one of their 18 group matches (W12 D5) and have never lost at home at this stage.

The Blues have won their last five matches in all competitions stretching back to last season. The most recent two wins were Sonia Bompastor's first matches in charge since succeeding Hayes.

Aside from their four games against Chelsea over the last two seasons, Real Madrid have faced off against English teams on three other occasions – all against Manchester City (W2 D1).

Real Madrid are in the group stage for the fourth consecutive season.

The only time they have advanced from the group was on their competition debut in 2021/22 when they finished second in a section featuring Paris Saint-Germain, Kharkiv and Breidablik. They lost to fellow Spanish side Barcelona 3-8 on aggregate (1-3 h, 2-5 a) in the quarter-finals.

Las Blancas qualified for this season's group stage having defeated Sporting CP over two legs in round 2. Melanie Leupolz scored in added time in the first leg in Portugal to secure a 2-1 win on 19 September, while Sandie Toletti struck twice in a 3-1 victory in Madrid a week later.

Alberto Toril's side have won their last ten away games in all competitions. Their last away defeat was against Atlético de Madrid on 8 February in the Copa de la Reina quarter-finals.

Real Madrid were second in the Spanish Liga in 2023/24, 15 points behind champions Barcelona. It was the third time in four seasons they had finished as runners-up.
