Last season's quarter-finalists Real Madrid renew UEFA Women's Champions League rivalries with two-time runners-up Paris Saint-Germain, who are aiming to recover from their first ever group stage defeat.

Alberto Toril's Madrid managed 33 shots in their 2-0 Group A success away to Vllaznia on 20 October, the most of any side across Matchday 1, second-half goals from Esther González and Olga Carmona, from a penalty she had won herself, securing the points. Goalkeeper Misa Rodríguez and her defensive colleagues were able to restrict the Albanian champions to no attempts of their own in Shkoder.

Paris suffered their first loss at this stage of the competition with their 1-0 home reverse against Chelsea on 20 October; Millie Bright's 27th-minute winner is the only goal they have conceded in their seven group fixtures to date.

These clubs were paired together in Group B last term, Les Parisiennes winning the Matchday 3 and 4 encounters as part of their flawless performance in the section.

Les Rouge-et-Bleu pulled clear of Madrid at the top the section thanks to a 4-0 home win in November 2021. The hosts scored via Marie-Antoinette Katoto's double (13, 54), Sara Däbritz's 41st-minute close-range effort and a Rocío Gálvez own goal (65).

Katoto (33) struck the opener again in the return fixture in Madrid nine days later, before Sakina Karchaoui (70) made it two from a tight angle.

The two defeats to Paris were Madrid's only losses in last season's group stage; the six goals scored by the Division 1 Féminine club were the only ones shipped by Las Blancas in Group B.

Players to watch

Esther González

The 29-year-old made her UEFA Women's Champions League group stage debut in the 4-0 defeat in Paris on Matchday 3 last season, playing the first 60 minutes before making way for Nahikari García.

The attacker had nine attempts on goal in Madrid's group opener against Vllaznia, the most shots of any player on Matchday 1.

González scored four times in Las Blancas' season opener on 18 August as the hosts beat Sturm Graz 6-0 in their Round 1 semi-final in qualifying ahead of this group stage.

The forward also struck three times in ten second-half minutes after coming off the bench in the 7-1 Primera División victory at home to Deportivo Alavés on 16 October.

The Spanish international had scored in La Roja's 2-0 friendly defeat of world champions the United States in Pamplona five days earlier.

After joining from Levante last summer, González managed 17 goals last term to finish as Madrid's leading scorer in her first season with the club.

Sakina Karchaoui

The 26-year-old was named Player of the Match in the last meeting between these teams, after scoring Paris's second goal in a 2-0 group victory in Madrid in November 2021.

The left-back's strike against the Spanish side in last season's competition remains her only UEFA Women's Champions League goal to date.

No Paris player made more starts in the 2021/22 UEFA Women's Champions League than Karchaoui's nine.

The defender scored Les Parisiennes' second goal in the 4-0 league win away to Rodez on 17 September.

Karchaoui was named in the Division 1 Féminine Team of the Year for the second season running in 2021/22.

The French international is in her second campaign with Paris after spending a year with Lyon – where she won the 2019/20 UEFA Women's Champions League.
