KÍ maintain Faroe Islands monopoly

KÍ Klaksvík's proud record of being the only side to compete in every season of UEFA women's club competition will continue next season after they claimed a 12th straight Faroe Islands title.

Captain Malena Josephsen was handed the trophy after they completed their 20-game campaign with an 8-0 win at HB Tórshavn, having dropped their only two points all season in the opening 1-1 draw with runners-up AB Argir, who KÍ subsequently beat three times in the league and also 1-0 in the Faroese Cup final. KÍ's current goal is to match Rosenborg BK's mark of 13 straight men's Norwegian titles, and Josephsen said: "We have got so close, so we'll have to really go for it."

That would leave them only one short of the men's European record, set by Latvia's Skonto FC between 1991 and 2004 and they look in good shape;  having clinched their latest title with two games to spare, they are on an unbeaten league run of 58 games stretching back to April 2009. Four players have been part of all 12 championship successes: Josepsen, Paula Mikkelsen, Elsa Maria Simonsen and Rannvá Andreasen, who has scored more than 500 goals for the club including 29 in the league this season to win another golden boot.

Proving adept at keeping hold of experienced players as well as developing youth talent, Andreasen is optimistic about KÍ's future. "We have improved both tactically and technically and many young players have arrived who are technically well developed," she said.

On the international stage, KÍ are assured a 12th straight participation in Europe in next season's UEFA Women's Champions League, having fallen at the first hurdle in all 11 of their participations. Josephsen is ever-present in the 33 fixtures KÍ have played, including six wins.
