Potsdam, Barcelona, Birmingham celebrate

A 7-0 win against 1. FC Lok Leipzig on Monday ensured that 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam became the first team to win four consecutive Frauen Bundesliga titles after a weekend when FC Barcelona claimed a maiden Spanish title and Birmingham City LFC clinched the FA Women's Cup in dramatic style.

Going into the final day in Germany, Potsdam led Wolfsburg by a point, with the top two already confirmed in next season's UEFA Women's Champions League. Turbine had won 2-0 at FCR 2001 Duisburg on the penultimate weekend, when Wolfsburg defeated 2011/12 European runners-up 1. FFC Frankfurt 1-0 to secure their European debut.

Yet the title remained up for grabs today and Potsdam made no mistake at home to bottom side Leipzig. They went three goals before half-time through Yuki Nagasato, Antonia Göransson and Genoveva Añonma and the Equatorial Guinea forward struck again soon after the break. That was the 22nd goal of the season for Añonma, who finished as the league's top scorer, but Potsdam were not finished, Nagasato finding the target twice for a hat-trick before Margrét Lára Vidarsdóttir and Isabel Kerschowski added further goals. Wolfsburg drew 1-1 with SG Essen-Schönebeck and behind them Frankfurt won 5-3 against Duisburg for the consolation of third place.

In France, Olympique Lyonnais – who beat Frankfurt earlier this month to retain the UEFA Women's Champions League title – will go into next Saturday's top-flight decider needing only a draw at FCF Juvisy Essonne for a sixth straight domestic crown. Having defeated Paris Saint-Germain FC 3-0 three days after their Munich victory against Frankfurt to go top, Lyon saw off Vendenheim FC 10-0 on Sunday. Juvisy remained a point behind by overcoming ASJ Soyaux-Charente 2-0, a result that confirmed a top-two finish and European football next season.

Barcelona secured their first Spanish women's title on Saturday to give them the chance to emulate their men's football and futsal sides in claiming the UEFA crown. Leading Athletic Club by three points at kick-off, Barcelona defeated Sporting de Huelva 1-0 with a 46th-minute Marta Corredera goal to ensure the Bilbao team's 8-2 victory at RCS Llanos Olivenza was in vain.

Joining Barcelona in the UEFA Women's Champions League next term will be 2011 English runners-up Birmingham and they will make their debut in high spirits having beaten Chelsea LFC 3-2 on penalties in Bristol to win their first FA Women's Cup. Chelsea led entering added time only for Rachel Williams to equalise and in extra time Birmingham's Karen Carney cancelled out Kate Longhurst's goal to force the shoot-out. Arsenal LFC will be England's other European representatives.
