Paris Saint-Germain left it late to eliminate Olympique Lyonnais and join holders VfL Wolfsburg. 1, FFC Frankfurt, Brøndby IF and first Scottish quarter-finalists Glasgow City FC in making the UEFA Women's Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday. UEFA.com's reporting team rounds up the first five round of 16 second legs.
Olympique Lyonnais 0-1 Paris Saint-Germain (agg: 1-2)
For the second year running two-time winners Lyon have fallen at the last-16 stage after a home defeat. Lyon, leading on away goals, had the better of the few openings.
However, with ten minutes left, substitute Marie-Laure Delie's shot was parried by Sarah Bouhaddi and Fatmire Alushi turned the ball in to add to her first-leg equaliser. Lyon pushed forward, but Paris are into the quarter-finals for the first time.
Glasgow City FC 4-2 FC Zürich Frauen (agg: 5-4)
Two goals in the last nine minutes gave Glasgow victory against another club that began in the qualifying round. In a tight first half Meriame Terchoun was taken to hospital as a precaution after a blow to the head and in added time Glasgow keeper Lee Alexander needed lengthy treatment after stopping Natasha Gensetter, who was through on goal – when play eventually resumed, Cinzia Zehnder scored.
By the 64-minute mark, the aggregate score was level after Abby Grant's lob and Leanne Ross's penalty. But two minutes later, Gensetter, who made the first, sent Fabienne Humm clear to find the net. Glasgow now needed two goals, but Joanne Love gave them hope with a long-range effort after a half-clear corner. With three minutes left Suzanne Lappin turned in a Ross free-kick.
VfL Wolfsburg 7-0 SV Neulengbach (agg: 11-0)
Having started the day by announcing that Nilla Fischer and Lena Goessling had signed new contracts running until 2017, the holders added to their aggregate lead within three minutes when Lina Magull's effort looped in.
There was no stopping Wolfsburg after that, with Fischer and Alexandra Popp also on target, Magull claiming her second and Selina Wagner registering a quick-fire double. Home goalkeeper Almuth Schult ended up doing jogging exercises in her own half as the Austrian champions were unable to respond.
ASD Torres Femminile Sassari 0-4 1. FFC Frankfurt (agg: 0-9)
Torres, under caretaker coach Mario Pompili after the departure earlier this week of Mario Silvetti, held their own for half an hour before Bianca Schmidt pulled the ball back for Dzsenifer Marozsán to score with the aid of a deflection.
Eleonara Piacezzi gave Frankfurt a hand, heading a Marozsán corner into her own goal, before Célia Šašić added a third from Kozue Ando's through pass. Šašić completed the scoring late on, stroking the ball past Mimma Fazio following Kathrin-Julia Hendrich's assist.
Gintra Universitetas 2-0 Brøndby IF (agg: 2-5)
The tie was over after the first leg but Lithuania's Gintra, who only made it out of the qualfiying round after 11 attempts this season, went out in style. Sonata Vanagaitė opened the scoring after a fine counterattack, and Ana Alekperova made it 2-0, delighting the home supporters with a clever set piece.
They had certainly caught the Danish visitors cold and played with fine organisation and passion. But five goals was beyond Gintra and Brøndby are into their seventh quarter-final, a tally bettered only by Frankfurt, Umeå IK and Arsenal LFC.
