'Torment' followed by relief for Glasgow

Coach Eddie Wolecki Black and goalscorer Denise O'Sullivan were most pleased with the patience shown by Glasgow City LFC in their UEFA Women's Champions League round of 32 triumph over KKPK Medyk Konin.

Glasgow City went into the second leg trailing Medyk Konin 2-0 – a deficit that remained until nearly an hour into Wednesday evening's game in Airdrie. Goals from Joanne Love and substitute Susan Fairlie took the tie to extra time, where O'Sullivan came up trumps to set up a last-16 meeting with fellow qualifying round survivors FC Zürich.

We certainly made it hard for ourselves. For anyone watching that tonight they would have gone through torment, but we got there in the end and it's fantastic. We said all through the week it didn't have to be an early goal, and at half-time that I would take 0-0. I told them at half-time that if we could get the first we would certainly get a second.

The key was not to give ourselves a ridiculous scoreline to chase by conceding early on, so I'm glad we managed to keep it tight because we went through a few scares early on. The first five or ten minutes we looked nervous but we grew into the game and I knew the longer the game went the more comfortable we would be.

It's absolutely amazing. It was a tough game, no doubt, but we are City and we fight until the end. We won the game and I can't explain how I am feeling, it's great. Eddie said before the game that if it's 0-0 at half-time, we don't mind. If we score a goal in the second half we will win this game and that's what he said to us at half-time.

We believed before the game we would win but that first goal gave us a bit of confidence and then we went at them and at them. I think they panicked a bit and then when we got the second and third goal we just had to sit in and defend.

We are very unhappy because we had chances to score a goal, and one would have taken us through to the next round. We thought 2-0 was a normal result coming into this game but we didn't think it was over coming here, so we left that game behind and came here to win this one. However, we have shown we can play in Europe and, for a first season in the Champions League, it was a good performance.

Today, the better team won, but we also created chances but had no luck. Glasgow City are going through to the next round because we didn't score or take our chances. Until now everything had been going well. We had won four games, lost one game. This is a very young team with some older, more experienced players, so we have taken a step forward in Europe and we're now looking forward to next season.
