After a goalless draw in the UEFA Women's Champions League semi-final first leg between 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam and VfL Wolfsburg left the all-German tie delicately poised, the former's coach Bernd Schröder said that his team afforded the holders too much respect at times.
However, he believes "everything is still possible" for the Frauen Bundesliga leaders in the return encounter next Sunday following what opposite number Ralf Kellermann, like Schröder frustrated by the opportunities his side squandered, called a "dangerous result" for Wolfsburg.
Bernd Schröder, Potsdam coach
A goalless draw often gives the impression of a bad game, but it was a good match with two teams knowing each other very well and neutralising one another. It was a difficult game. We played too passively in the first half, some of our players showed too much respect. Wolfsburg played well and created some good chances.
We increased the pressure in the second half but would have hoped to do that from the beginning. However, we were not playing against nobodies. [Defender] Lia Wälti was extraordinary today. We had opportunities in the second half, but it was a typical draw. We go to Wolfsburg at 0-0 – everything is still possible.
Stefanie Draws, Potsdam captain
A 0-0 draw is a good result for us. It was important not to concede. Both teams had their chances and both teams were lucky at times. It was a hard-fought contest. Wolfsburg were the better team in the first half, but we showed in the second half what we are capable of. We might have been a bit nervous and the break was at the right time. We knew that it would be a tough game and Wolfsburg put us under pressure. We trained hard over the last few weeks and you could see that we have enough stamina for 90 minutes. We are prepared for the rest of the season and our physical strength might give us the edge in the second leg.
Maren Mjelde, Potsdam defender
I'm satisfied as we did not concede any goals. It was the first leg today and both teams were a bit nervous. In the first half we did not play our own game, people were a bit insecure. In the second leg the game has to open up a bit, as both teams will need goals. We know that Wolfsburg are a good team with so many good players, so we had to expect them to come out strong. Next Sunday we will need to get a goal, then they will have to score two. It is all up to us now.
Ralf Kellermann, Wolfsburg coach
There was too much at stake today, so nobody could expect a fantastic game. Both teams were physically strong and showed good pressing, but still we managed to create four or five good chances. Two of them were extraordinary – from Martina Müller and one from Alex Popp. We did not give a lot away and we were lucky at times, such as when Potsdam had set pieces.
We missed another great opportunity early in the second half when [Verena] Faisst's effort was cleared off the line. It would have been an important away goal. In the last 20 minutes Potsdam put us under some pressure with long balls. Overall we are a bit disappointed that we did not score, having created various chances. Nil-nil is a dangerous result.
Alexandra Popp, Wolfsburg forward
It is a good result, but we had our chances to score, especially when I think about mine. Kessi [Nadine Kessler] played a good pass and I looked at the goalkeeper and wanted to shoot at the far post. Unfortunately the ball didn't go in, but I don't know what I could have done better, as I took the right decision. It was like it often is when playing in Potsdam, a balanced game and Potsdam created some chances. We are already looking forward to the second leg now – we would love to play it tomorrow. We are a very strong team playing at home and it will not be easy for Potsdam to prevail.
Nilla Fischer, Wolfsburg defender
We had great chances to score, but getting a draw away is a good result for us. I went for a goal from a good corner, but didn't get my timing right and the ball went over the bar. It was a good chance to score. We said before the game we wanted to play smart from the beginning, as we knew they can put us under pressure here. We went for a win. It is going to be exciting next week. The key will be to find the right balance between the long balls and keeping calm a little bit more.
