Pride at stake for Torres at Potsdam

ASD Torres CF may have to pull off the most sensational result imaginable to beat 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam to the UEFA Women's Champions League semi-finals on Sunday but that does not mean the Italian side have nothing to play for.

An experienced Torres team lost 8-0 to Potsdam in Sardinia last weekend, pretty much ensuring a second straight quarter-final exit for the Italian club. However, defender Elisabetta Tona knows there is still something tangible at stake.

"We always play for pride," Tona told UEFA.com. "[The first leg] didn't really go well, but we'll go there to get a good result. We're definitely not going there just to lose so let's hope we do better. It's going to be impossible to turn the tie around, but we'll go there to play for our honour."

That was echoed by Iceland midfielder Hallbera Gísladóttir, whose first European appearance for new club Torras could hardly have gone worse. "Obviously we know we're not going to score nine or ten goals, but I think we have to go there with heads held high and try to get a better result, because this is embarrassing for us," she said.

As for Potsdam, who have been in superb form in the Frauen Bundesliga since the winter break, thoughts can already turn a little to the possible all-German semi-final with VfL Wolfsburg. Julia Simic and Johanna Elsig are suspended on Sunday, while Nataša Andonova, Genoveva Añonma, Tabea Kemme and Antonia Göransson are one booking from missing the first leg of the last four.

Bernd Schröder, aiming to become the first coach to win three UEFA women's club titles, said: "We've got two players who picked up a second yellow card so we have to make some changes, which is also a good thing, but we're going to have a big crowd at home, three or four thousand at least, so we've got to take the game seriously and play it as if the tie was still 0-0. We want to give the fans some entertainment and I'm sure Torres will want to play a good game too and not concede eight goals."

Scotland forward Lisa Evans, who supplied three assists before netting Potsdam's eighth last Sunday, added: "Every game we create lots of chances and it's all about taking those chances. We'll prepare just as always. We want to win every game as well as we can, we want to score goals, and we want to have fun when we play."
