Lyon, Barcelona, Neulengbach post wins

Olympique Lyonnais, FC Barcelona and SV Neulengbach are all well-placed to emerge from the UEFA Women's Champions League round of 16 after posting first-leg victories.

Olympique Lyonnais prevailed in the battle of the two-time winners as they defeated 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam 1-0, on a day when FC Barcelona and SV Neulengbach also prised open the door to the UEFA Women's Champions League quarter-finals. The other five round of 16 first legs were played on Saturday and the returns are on Wednesday and Thursday.

In a rematch of the 2010 and 2011 finals, the hosts should arguably have been ahead by half-time, Ada Hegerberg heading oto the post while Genoveva Añonma misfired when unmarked inside the area. The visitors' clinical edge ultimately decided a game that progressed at dizzying pace, however, Laëtitia Tonazzi's through ball finding French international Louisa Necib, who produced an unerring finish to keep Lyon on course for a fifth straight final with the return on Thursday.

Less than a minute was on the clock when Sonia Bermúdez found the net with aplomb from inside the area. Captain Vicky Losada doubled the advantage on 70 minutes, curling a shot into the top corner from 25 metres before Bermúdez added the final flourish in the final minute to put the Spanish outfit in touch of their first quarter-final when they go to Switzerland on Wednesday.

Captain Nina Burger hit a hat-trick to move into joint fourth in the all-tie competition scoring list on 38 goals as the visitors edged closer to a place in the last eight with a dominant performance in Turkey. Only a string of fine saves from the debutants' goalkeeper Fatma Şahin prevented Neulengbach from winning by a more emphatic margin. but they have a tough task in Austria on Thursday.
