Wolfsburg, Tyresö and English duo prevail

Holders VfL Wolfsburg, Swedish debutants Tyresö FF, FC Rossiyanka and English duo Arsenal LFC and Birmingham LFC all picked up victories in the UEFA Women's Champions League round of 16 first legs. The remaining three first legs are played on Sunday with the returns on Wednesday and Thursday.

FCR Malmö 1-2 VfL Wolfsburg
Holders Wolfsburg were given a tough game by the Swedish champions but just like in last season's final against Olympique Lyonnais, a Martina Müller penalty gave them victory. Malmö were the better team for much of the game with Ramona Bachmann a particular threat but Alexandra Popp headed Wolfsburg in front at the break. Bachmann levelled on 64 minutes frpm a tight angle but with five minutes to go Popp was fouled in the box and Müller converted. Manon Melis hit the bar at the end to leave Malmö trailing for Wednesday's second leg.

Fortuna Hjørring 1-2 Tyresö FF
Tyresö, beaten to the Swedish title by Malmö, look good to reach the quarter-finals in their debut season after victory in Denmark. With the pouring rain and soggy pitch making life difficult for both teams in the first half, Fortuna's Camilla Larsen blazed over while at the other end captain Caroline Seger's long-range effort came close.

Tyresö started the second half brightly and were soon rewarded as Christen Press met Verónica Boquete's early cross to beat Maria Christensen. Press then turned in another right-wing cross from fellow American Alex Krieger. Press was denied a hat-trick when sent clean through as Christensen saved and Fortuna grabbed a lifeline when Nadia Nadim scored from Florentina Spânu Olar's centre, but Tyresö will begin ahead on Thursday.

Arsenal LFC 3-0 Glasgow City LFC
In the first-ever Anglo-Scottish encounter in UEFA women's club competition, Arsenal went ahead on 14 minutes when Stephanie Houghton turned in Rachel Yankey's corner. Arsenal continued to press and Alex Scott's low cross just before the break fell nicely in front of goal for Danielle Carter, who like Jordan Nobbs agreed a new contract this week.

It was 3-0 just past the hour when Glasgow's Eilish McSorley touched Ellen White's header from a Yankey cross into her own net. Carter hit the bar soon after, but was then replaced by Kelly Smith for her first Arsenal appearance since injury in March. Smith was only just denied from distance but Arsenal are in control for Wednesday's second leg.

FK Zorkiy Krasnogorsk 0-2 Birmingham City LFC
Although Vira Dyatel went close early on, Birmingham had the better of the game in Russia and like English rivals Arsenal look good to make the last eight. In the 27th minute Isobel Christiansen picked up a long pass and chipped goalkeeper Maria Zhamanakova to give the visitors the lead and Jade Moore also added another in similar style. Just before the hour Karen Carney set up Jo Potter to double the advantage and Emily Simpkins had late opportunities, but all looks good for Birminghan at St Andrew's on Wednesday.

FC Rossiyanka 1-0 ASD Torres Calcio
In a physical encounter, Russia's Rossiyanka took the advantage against their fellow 2012/13 quarter-finalists when, under pressure, Linda Tucceri Cimini put the ball in her own net on 18 minutes. Torres were unable to grab an away goal to take back to Sardinia on Thursday.
