Wolfsburg wait, Lyon record, Barcelona triumph

VfL Wolfsburg will have to wait a week before claiming their first Frauen Bundesliga title but their UEFA Women's Champions League final opponents at Stamford Bridge on 23 May, Olympique Lyonnais, keep on winning and breaking records while FC Barcelona triumphed in a Spanish decider.

Wolfsburg made their European debut this season as German runners-up but dropped points by main rivals 1. FFC Frankfurt and 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam in recent weeks meant that Wednesday's 4-1 victory at Bayer 04 Leverkusen was a virtual championship clincher. It left Wolfsburg six points ahead of Frankfurt with two games left and a virtually insurmountable goal difference, and definitely ended Potsdam's run of four straight titles.

However, Wolfsburg still needed a point at Potsdam on Sunday to mathematically become the first team other than Turbine or Frankfurt to take the crown since 1999/2000, but instead fell to a 2-0 defeat through teenage pair Nataša Andonova and Pauline Bremer. Wolfsburg were not ensured the title as Frankfurt won 1-0 at SC 07 Bad Neuenahr, but more importantly for the three-time European champions they remain a point ahead of Potsdam. Frankfurt will return to UEFA competition next season with Wolfsburg if they beat FC Bayern München next Sunday, when the leaders welcome Bad Neuenahr.

Aiming for a third consecutive UEFA Women's Champions League triumph, Lyon have already clinched a seventh straight French title and underlined their dominance on Sunday by winning 6-0 at Arras FCF, Camille Abily and Eugénie Le Sommer both scoring twice and Élodie Thomis and Louisa Necib also on target. They have won all 20 of their league games this season and the victory took them to a French championship record of 120 goals, one ahead of last season's mark, with two fixtures still to go.

Indeed, Lyon have now won 40 competitive fixtures in a row, going back more than a year, and will move closer to a possible treble if they defeat Montpellier Hérault SC in next Sunday's French Cup semi-final. FCF Juvisy Essonne, beaten by Lyon in the UEFA Women's Champions League last four, are four points behind Paris Saint-Germain FC in the race for France's second European place thanks to a 1-0 win at Montpellier; the two capital clubs are matched on 18 May.

Elsewhere, in a dramatic end to the Spanish season, Barcelona clinched a second straight title and European qualification after a 2-1 win at Athletic Club, who had led by a point going into their decisive fixture. There were more than 25,000 watching at San Mamés as Melanie Serrano and Kenti Robles scored for Barcelona, whose debut European campaign was ended by Arsenal LFC in the round of 32 this season.
