Olympique Lyonnais began their bid to win a third UEFA Women's Champions League final in a row having not lost over 90 minutes for 120 games – but a 1-0 defeat by VfL Wolfsburg left those hopes in tatters and their players rueing missed chances.
Élodie Thomis, a huge threat down the left for Lyon, told UEFA.com that Wolfsburg had "talented players that give 200%" – but despite the reverse she vowed to be back. Meanwhile, Amandine Henry reflected after playing her fourth final in as many years: "Dominating doesn't mean winning."
Élodie Thomis, forward
[The disappointment is great] especially because we created a lot of chances, but we didn't convert them. Against a good defensive team that play well on the counterattack, we paid the full price for that. Unfortunately we made a mistake at the back which cost us a penalty. We paid the full price for it. It was a bit difficult to come back, there was not enough time for that. We have a lot of regrets. But Wolfsburg deserve it, they are a good team with talented players. It was a good game tonight.
We were the holders and we knew that they would give 200%. When you face talented players that give 200%, it gets a bit difficult. I think that looking at the whole game we could have won, but we paid the full price with the penalty. We missed too many chances and in a European final you pay for that.
We will keep working hard. The girls have renewed their contracts. We lost tonight and we are disappointed, but there is still a game to come on Sunday – we have the French Cup final to play – and we need to focus on that. That's how things go: sometimes you can lose and you have to accept it.
Amandine Henry, midfielder
Everyone saw us as favourites, but it was a trap and we fell into it. I think we lacked efficiency in front of goal, and we were playing against a very strong Wolfsburg team. [We are] very disappointed. We really wanted to win this trophy, we felt like it was ours. We played the whole season thinking about playing in this final. As they say in football, dominating doesn't mean winning. We were lacking a lot of efficiency in front of goal and we paid the price.
