Munich preparing for Lyon-Frankfurt final

The UEFA Women's Champions League trophy was handed over to the city of Munich on Friday in readiness for a final which came into even sharper focus as 1. FFC Frankfurt and Olympique Lyonnais completed semi-final victories this weekend.

Frankfurt, the only three-time winners of the competition, sealed their place in the Olympiastadion final by defeating Arsenal LFC 2-0 on home soil on Saturday and 4-1 on aggregate.

Intriguingly, their opponents on Thursday 17 May will be Lyon after the holders completed a comfortable aggregate triumph against 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam. Already 5-1 up after the first leg, Lyon drew 0-0 in Germany on Sunday to secure their place in the showpiece.

The French club will therefore be taking on a German side in the final for the third successive season, having lost on penalties to Potsdam in 2010 before exacting revenge last May.

Lara Dickenmann scored in that most recent final in London and got her hands back on the UEFA Women's Champions League trophy on Friday as, representing Lyon, she presented the silverware to Christine Strobl, the mayor of Munich for sport, via UEFA President Michel Platini.

"We are happy to be in the final," she said on Sunday. "We've known since yesterday it will be Frankfurt, but we can't think about it yet. We want to win three titles this season; we have a cup semi-final and want to win the league again. We will take it step by step and think about the final in the week of 17 May."

Munich's Old Town Hall staged Friday's ceremony, when the UEFA Champions League trophy was also given to the city by FC Barcelona ahead of the men's final at the Fuβball Arena München. The three other European Cup finals staged in the Bavarian capital – in 1979, 1993 and 1997 – all took place at the Olympiastadion.

Among the dignitaries in attendance was Steffi Jones, ambassador both for the final and UEFA's Women's Football Development Programme. "I think the opportunity to play in a 'home' stadium is an added motivation," she said of Frankfurt, the club with whom she won two UEFA Women's Cup titles.

"It is an honour for me to be part of the delegation bringing these prestigious trophies to Germany and Munich. The 2012 UEFA Women's Champions League final will be the highlight of the European women's club football calendar and I am already looking forward to being in the crowd at the game on 17 May."

Both the women's and men's trophies were on display at Karlsplatz on Saturday, the first stop on a tour of the city that will conclude at the UEFA Champions Festival in the Olympiapark.
