The prestigious Olympiastadion, hosting this season's biggest event in European women's club football on Thursday 17 May, was a splendid setting for the ticket launch ceremony of the UEFA Women's Champions League final on a sunny spring day in Munich.
An allocation of around 50,000 tickets will go on sale to the German and international general public on Friday via Munich ticket website http://www.muenchenticket.de, 200 sales offices in southern Germany and by phone (+49 89 54 81 81 81). There will also be tickets on sale on the eve of the final at the entrance to the Olympic Stadium.
Giorgio Marchetti, UEFA Director of Competitions, emphasised the importance to create a family-friendly event. "This final will take place on a public holiday with an early kick-off time of 18.00CET, as we hope that families with children will attend the game," he said. "Special ticket packages for families and groups are offered, public transport will be included." Main stand tickets will be available for €10 and there are discounted prices for groups of at least 11 people for €5, family tickets at €20 for two people with two children of up to 16 years of age.
Marchetti praised the increasing popularity of women's football in Europe over the last few years and the organisation of the event: "UEFA is very happy and thankful to all the partners, DFB, city of Munich, Olympiapark GmbH, LOC and FC Bayern München. It is an easy organisation here in Munich, because the traditional German efficiency is helping us a lot, even if there are many challenges."
The Munich showpiece will provide the opportunity to break the record attendance of 28,112 for a UEFA Women's Cup final (the second leg between FCR 2001 Duisburg and WFC Zvezda-2005 in 2009). Steffi Jones, the 2012 UEFA Women's Champions League final ambassador, explained: "I am looking forward to the final and to the festival, as we want to promote women's and girl's football and to encourage girls to play everywhere. I am thankful that UEFA is investing money in the promotion of women's football."
Paul Breitner, UEFA Champions League ambassador for the men's final, is proud that Munich will once again host a prestigious football event. "It is always a pleasure to return to the Olympic Stadium, there are so many fond memories. It is still the most beautiful stadium in the world with it's fantastic architecture. I am proud UEFA is honouring Munich as one of the most attractive venues for football and I want to pay my respect for the decision to host the final here along with the fan festival "Mach mit!" ("Join in!"). I want to invite everybody to play a part on 17 May to make the day an unforgettable football event."
Football will be brought back to life once more in the Olympiastadion, as the last official match was played seven years ago on 15 May 2005. Olympic Park spokesperson Arno Hartung said: "You should never say never again. Football returns to the Olympic Stadium and we are proud that for the first time in history the stadium will host a women's game and especially such a high-profile event."
From 16 to 19 May the UEFA Champions League Festival will open its doors in the Olympic Park and especially young people shall be attracted. "It is not just a typical fan park," explained Marchetti. "We invite people to try and enjoy football. There will be many features, like children and youth tournaments, the museum of Champions showing memorabilia of the event and the theatre of Champions to tell people the history of the competition, showing a 30-minute movie about great moments and great players. It should be something special for children and young people."
