Schelin delight as Lyon hit form

Forward Lotta Schelin believes Olympique Lyonnais produced their "best performance so far" in this season's UEFA Women's Champions League to brush quarter-final first-leg visitors Brøndby IF aside 4-0 at Stade de Gerland. The Danish visitors were outplayed for long periods in south-east France by a team that their coach Peer Lisdorff described as "the best in Europe."

We played a really good game. We played our own game, scored some goals and got a good result. We're really satisfied. We also missed some opportunities but four goals is a good lead so we won't think too much about them. I didn't score but I made some passes and was satisfied with my own performance. We have so many players who can score goals; having different scorers like this shows our strength.

I think [potential semi-final opponents] Potsdam should be worried about us! They are a really good team too and of course there are lots of good teams left but we have turned in our best performance of the competition so far tonight. We are still the champions so there are a lot of teams that want to beat us.

Like Swedish and German sides, Danish teams play a very physical brand of football with a lot of long balls. We were warned about that and we managed to counter their style by imposing our own game. We were very positive, did everything in a wholehearted way, and we scored four goals. The coach told us to attack down the flanks and the tactic paid off.

We have some great players and they just keep getting better. This team has been together for three or four years. Everyone gets on well away from the pitch and you feel that when we go out to play. The result is encouraging but nothing has been achieved yet. We are only at half-time and we'll approach the second leg in the same way.

Lyon are a really good team. We ran and ran after the ball. There was nothing else we could do today. In the first half I really thought we could come back but then they got on top. I think this is the toughest game we have had. We met Potsdam two years ago – they were a really good team – but I think Lyon are a little bit better. They are so fast all over the pitch. We are not used to having to run after the ball like that.

Lyon are the best team in Europe. It was tough but it was a good experience and we will learn. We are disappointed because sometimes we made them look good, leaving them too much space. We didn't play as well as I had hoped. The players did what they could but we have to accept we were up against a very good team. We defended a little too deep at times. When Lotta Schelin went in behind we fell back with her and that gave them space to play in front of our defence. We should have stayed higher up the pitch.
