Three-time European title winners 1. FFC Frankfurt have another test of their credentials while two Russian sides go head to head when the UEFA Women's Champions League round of 16 begins on 2 and 3 November.
Frankfurt had to overturn a first-leg deficit to get past Stabæk FK in the last 32 as they ended a two-year European absence, but next Wednesday face tricky visitors in debutants Paris Saint-Germain FC, keen to emulate compatriots Olympique Lyonnais. Holders Lyon are at AC Sparta Praha in one of three fascinating Thursday first legs.
That number includes the trip of Russian champions FC Rossiyanka to their only realistic challengers for the 2011/12 league title, FC Energiya Voronezh – the first tie between two teams from the same nation involving clubs from outside Germany or Sweden. Also on that day 2007 winners Arsenal LFC go to Rayo Vallecano de Madrid, who beat the Gunners 2-0 in the equivalent match a year ago only to succumb 4-1 after a last-gasp goal in the return.
Among the four Wednesday ties, alongside Frankfurt against PSG, another German side, last season's runners-up and two-time champions 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam, welcome Glasgow City LFC, the first Scottish outfit to get to this stage.
Both Swedish teams are on the road, WFC Malmö – who recently retained the Damallsvenskan crown – heading to Austria's SV Neulengbach and Göteborg FC visiting 2003 runners-up Fortuna Hjørring. The other Danish representatives, two-time semi-finalists Brøndby IF, meet Italian champions ASD Torres CF. All the second legs take place on 9 or 10 November.
