Wolecki's delight at Glasgow success

Only one of the 16 non-seeds made it through the UEFA Women's Champions League round of 32 and Glasgow City LFC manager Eddie Wolecki Black if thrilled with their victory at Valur Reykjavík.

The Scottish side, playing their first knockout game after missing out in four previous European campaigns, were held 1-1 at home by Valur last week but came away from Iceland with a brilliant 3-0 win, Hallbera Gísladóttir's tenth-minute own goal added to after the break by two Lisa Evans strikes in quick succession just after the hour. That has set up a round of 16 tie with two-time champions 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam early next month and Wolecki, whose team clinched a fifth straight Scottish title at the weekend, hailed his players.

"I am absolutely delighted for everyone involved in the club," Wolecki said. "We thoroughly deserved the result. Most pleasing was the fact we showed great maturity to play away from home in a European tie and dominate the ball. The girls felt they had let themselves down last week, but the staff believed the away tie would suit us better and that proved to be the case."

Of course, to repeat the trick against Potsdam would be an even greater achievement for a Glasgow side who in the last two seasons fell in the qualifying round to FC Bayern München and FCR 2001 Duisburg. "We are very aware of our opponents in the next round and their reputation but we have considerable experience of playing against German sides," Wolecki said. "First though, I want the girls to get a moment to enjoy this victory and what they have achieved so far."
