Stabæk stun Frankfurt, Lyon hit nine

Stabæk FK made a stunning UEFA Women's Champions League debut with a round of 32 first-leg defeat of 1. FFC Frankfurt but holders Olympique Lyonnais began their title defence in superb style.

Frankfurt, the sole three-time winners, are returning to Europe after two years away but must overturn a 1-0 deficit next Wednesday. They dominated the encounter but could not beat Ingrid Hjelmseth, with a Melanie Behringer effort against the post the closest they came to equalising. Cathrine Dekkerhus scored the only goal afer 54 minutes as her effort deflected off the leg of Saskia Bartusiak and looped over Nadine Angerer and in.

Lyon, who have scored 19 goals without reply in their two French league games this season, confirmed that form with a 9-0 victory at CFF Olimpia Cluj, one of ten sides to reach the last 32 from last month's preliminary round. It was 8-0 at half-time, Olimpia's Adina Giurgiu having been sent off in the 16th minute when conceding the penalty from which Eugénie Le Sommer got Lyon's second to kick-off a seven-minute hat-trick. Substitute and European debutant Amel Majri scored the only goal of the second half with five minutes left.

The winners of the Apollon Limassol LFC-AC Sparta Praha tie will meet Lyon in the round of 16, their first leg having finished 2-2 tonight. The home side came from behind and were on course for a deserved victory when an added-time goal by substitute Nikola Danihelková earned the Czech visitors a draw.

The team that Lyon beat in last season's European final, German champions Potsdam, began strongly with a 6-0 victory at Icelandic newcomers Thór/KA. Japanese FIFA Women's World Cup winner Yuki Nagasto, who missed that final through injury, claimed a hat-trick.

Debutants securing better results were Göteborg FC, 4-0 at WFC Osijek, and Paris Saint-Germain FC, who won 2-0 at Peamount United with impressive late strikes from substitutes Nora Coton Pelagie and Cindy Thomas. Fortuna Hjørring, runners-up in 2003, prevailed 3-0 at BSC Young Boys.

The only side other than Stabæk taking a lead to an away match next week are CSHVSM. The Kazakh team defeated Austria's SV Neulengbach 2-1 thanks to Olga Aniskovtseva's second goal in added time. Elsewhere, Rayo Vallecano de Madrid won 4-1 at PK-35 Vantaa in the only meeting between two preliminary round qualifiers and FC Rossiyanka made their dominance at FC Twente tell in the last five minutes through Cristiane and Sofia Jakobsson to secure a 2-0 victory.

Brøndby IF and ASD Torres CF won Tuesday's two games away from home. The remaining four first legs take place on Thursday with 2007 victors Arsenal LFC among the teams in action. All second legs are next Wednesday or Thursday. The draw for November's round of 16 is already made.
