Qualifying round groups settled

BSC Young Boys, ASA Tel-Aviv FC, Glasgow City LFC, PK-35 Vantaa, Apollon Limassol LFC and WFC Osijek secured first place in their UEFA Women's Champions League qualifying round groups on Tuesday to move into the round of 32 as the eight mini-tournament concluded.

Those six join Rayo Vallecano de Madrid and CFF Olimpia Cluj, who clinched first place in their sections before today's concluding games, and the 22 teams given byes to next Tuesday's round of 32 and 16 draws. The remaining places will be filled by the two runners-up with the best record against the sides first and third in their section, to be confirmed on Wednesday morning. Group 1
European debutants BSC Young Boys needed only a point against PAOK FC to top the group in Strumica and went ahead through Annina Spahr's fine header on 13 minutes. Lia Wälti's penalty was saved by PAOK's Eleni Charalampidou late in the first half and Elena Dimitrijević equalised with a powerful strike early in the second but Young Boys held on for a 1-1 draw. That meant hosts ZFK Nase Taksi-SNT 2010 had to settle for second place despite a 6-0 defeat of CS Goliador-SS 11 Chisinau thanks to Shireta Brahimi's hat-trick.

Group 2
Three teams were in contention at kick-off but it was ASA Tel-Aviv FC who prevailed. Portuguese hosts SU 1° Dezembro, ahead of ASA on goal difference, drew 0-0 with MTK Hungária FC, who began the day a point behind and dominated through captain Rita Méry but could not beat impressive goalkeeper Patrícia Morais. That meant ASA's 4-1 win against SK Liepājas Metalurgs was enough for them to progress a stage further than on their debut last term. The Israeli champions dominated the game but took 55 minutes to break the deadlock through a Rachel Shelina penalty, after which they eased away, though with two minutes left Sintija Greijere struck for Liepājas to become the first player to score for a Latvian club in this competition.

Group 3
Already through before today Rayo Vallecano de Madrid defeated Slovenian hosts ŽNK Krka 4-0 thanks to a Jenniffer Hermoso hat-trick, deserved reward for the most impressive player of the mini-tournament. In the race for second place, Irish debutants Peamount United beat Estonia's Pärnu JK 5-1 with two-goal Sara Lawlor starring to leave themselves in a strong position to progress as one of the two best runners-up.

Group 4
Like Rayo, CFF Olimpia Cluj's knockout berth was already secure and they also ensured a perfect third win, defeating Ataşehir Belediyespor 4-1, Cosmina Duşa taking her goal tally to five. Hosts WFC SFK 2000 Sarajevo took the consolation of second place by defeating FK Gintra Universitetas 2-1, allowing Ataşehir to claim third ahead of the Lithuanian side on goals scored.

Group 5
Glasgow City LFC, denied by FC Bayern München and FCR 2001 Duisburg at this stage in the last two years, put that right in some style as a 5-0 win against KÍ Klaksvík took them through with nine points and 17 unanswered goals. That meant Serbian hosts ŽFK Spartak's 11-0 win against Mosta FC was in vain, though five goals for Jelena Čubrilo and four for Nevena Damjanović meant they both finished as qualifying round joint top scorers with Apollon's Laura Roxana Rus on six.

Group 6
Finnish hosts PK-35 Vantaa got the 1-1 draw they needed against RTP Unia Racibórz to go through on their debut campaign, a point ahead of ŠK Slovan Bratislava despite their 16-0 defeat of KS Ada with five Dana Fecková goals. Jenae Seppälä put PK-35 ahead on 22 minutes but although Chinasa quickly equalised and home player Sanna Saarinen was sent off late on, the Vantaa side held on.

Group 7
In an exciting finish home team Apollon Limassol LFC came from behind to beat FC Legenda Chernigiv and pip their Ukrainian opponents. Legenda, requiting a win to pip Apollon, opened the scoring against the run of play in the second minute of first-half stoppage time when Juliya Vaschenko's powerful volley hit the crossbar before it landed into the net. Apollon, aiming to reach the last 32 for the second year running, pressed hard and with 12 minutes left Hayley Lauder found space in the box and turned in a neat ball to Liliana Kostova, who tapped in from close range. In the last minute Rus twisted and turned in the area before beating Legenda keeper Kateryna Samson to win the game with her sixth goal of the round. Swansea City Ladies FC defeated FC Progrès Niedercorn 4-0 for third.

Group 8
WFC Osijek, staging the group in Croatia, ended a run of four straight first-stage exits as they beat Newtownabbey Strikers WFC 5-1. FC NSA Sofia, who had been joint first at kick-off, lost 3-0 to Belarusian side FC Bobruichanka, who gave themselves a chance of going through as one of the two best runners-up thanks to a tremendous display by Irina Tretiakova and Olga Manzhuk. In their game, Osijek never looked back after early goals from Martina Šalek and Maja Joščak, who later converted a penalty after Kimberly McMullan was sent off.
