Potsdam take title, Arsenal beat Everton

UEFA Women's Champions League holders 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam wrapped up a third straight German title ahead of their return to European action, while Arsenal LFC knocked fellow quarter-finalists Everton out of the FA Women's Cup – which provides a route to qualification next season.

Potsdam went into the final day of the Frauen-Bundesliga season a point ahead of 1. FFC Frankfurt, and a 3-0 defeat of SG Essen-Schönebeck ensured Turbine took the crown again. Within four minutes Viola Odebrecht and Anja Mittag had put Potsdam 2-0 up and in the second half Babett Peter had added a third to delight a 7,000 crowd, only bettered once in the league's history.

Frankfurt completed their campaign with an 8-2 defeat of FC Bayern München to take their goal tally for the season to over 100, while Conny Pohlers struck twice to end as league top scorer with 25. The only side to win three European titles, they will return to continental competition next season along with Potsdam in the round of 32. But while Potsdam go to FCR Juvisy Essonne on Wednesday in the first leg of their quarter-final knowing a return is assured, FCR 2001 Duisburg, who finished third, must win the UEFA Women's Champions League to qualify again.

On Thursday Duisburg visit Everton, who also must claim the European title to return to the competition after their 2-0 loss to Arsenal in the FA Women's Cup last 16. With the new FA WSL not starting until next month, the knockout competition is deciding England's entrants for next season. Second-half goals from Rachel Yankey and Katie Chapman took Arsenal into the last eight, gaining revenge for their final defeat by Everton last season.

Arsenal play Linköpings FC on Thursday, with the Swedish side yet to begin their season, as is the case for Russia's Zvezda-2005, who take on Olympique Lyonnais and have warmed up with a German training camp, beating FC Twente 4-1 last week.

Lyon, meanwhile, are top in France with 16 perfect wins, six points clear of Montpellier Hérault SC and 15 ahead of fourth-placed Juvisy. On Sunday Lyon moved into the French Cup quarter-finals with a 3-0 defeat of Rodez AF while Juvisy won 5-0 at Saint Herblain OC .
