Fortuna make it two in a row

Fortuna Hjørring beat Odense BK 3-1 to retain the Danish women's title with one game still remaining.

That victory ensures that Fortuna remained four points ahead of Brøndby IF, who they face next weekend. Fortuna's domestic success means they will once again line up in the UEFA Women's Champions League round of 32 while confirmed runners-up Brøndby enter the qualifying round.

It was not all plain sailing in Odense on Saturday, however, the hosts taking the lead courtesy of Liv Nyhegn's penalty. Fortuna were behind for only a minute, though, Chichi Igbo drawing them level. A draw was not enough to rubber-stamp the championship and the visitors had to wait until there were just ten minutes remaining to edge themselves in front, Igbo adding her second of the game before Lise Munk removed any doubt to assure a 3-1 triumph and the title.

Hjørring, UEFA Women's Cup runners-up in 2003 and beaten to the quarter-finals this time around by Olympique Lyonnais, and Brøndby join a number of familiar names in next season's edition. Holders 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam and previous winners FCR 2001 Duisburg will represent Germany, Linköpings FC and Umeå IK qualified from Sweden, Arsenal LFC and Everton enter from England alongside Russia's Zvezda-2005 and WFC Rossiyana.

One major league is still to be decided, with Lyon – beaten by Potsdam on penalties in this season's final – not yet sure of retaining the French title. They lead FCF Juvisy by a point with one game to go, with Lyon visiting bottom side AS Montigny-le-Bretonneux next Saturday. Lyon are sure of returning to Europe while Juvisy will make sure of their place unless they lose at FCF Hénin-Beaumont and Paris Saint-Germain FC beat RC Saint-Étienne.
