Umeå, Lyon and Potsdam all slip

Neither Umeå IK nor Olympique Lyonnais could win ahead of their delayed semi-final on Wednesday while 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam suffered their first league loss of the season.

It proved a frustrating weekend for UEFA Women's Champions League semi-finalists Umeå IK and Olympique Lyonnais ahead of Wednesday's delayed second leg. Meanwhile, 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam, already into the decider, were beaten for the first time this season in the Frauen-Bundesliga on Sunday.

Lyon were facing Paris Saint-Germain FC in the French Cup semi-finals on Sunday and suffered the same fate as at the same stage against Montpellier Hérault SC last season – defeat on penalties. Caroline Pizzala's early goal for PSG was cancelled out by Isabell Herlovsen but Lyon had Laura Georges sent off and fell 3-2 on spot kicks. PSG meet holders Montpellier in the final while Lyon coach Farid Benstiti said: "It is very frustrating. Like last season in Montpellier, we dominated the match but failed to make the difference."

On Wednesday Lyon make their delayed trip to Umeå with the Swedish side trailing 3-2. This weekend they drew 1-1 with the side that beat them to the 2009 Damallsveskan title, Linköpings FC. Anna Westerlund did put the home side in front during the first half but with ten minutes left Charlotte Rohlin equalised, leaving Umeå eighth after three games.

Potsdam, who last weekend secured their place in the 20 May final in Getafe, had won 16 and drawn two of their 18 league matches prior to their trip to three-time European champions 1. FFC Frankfurt. They could have retained the German title if they had won and FCR 2001 Duisburg failed to defeat 1. FC Saarbrücken. Turbine, who had Nadine Kessler sent off in the first half, took a 55th-minute lead through Fatmire Bajramaj but with four minutes to go Ariane Hingst equalised and Birgit Prinz won the game with an added-time penalty.

Duisburg, defeated by Potsdam on penalties in the UEFA Women's Champions League semi-finals, beat Saarbrücken 6-0 with Inka Grings scoring twice to take her season's tally to 27 goals, ten clear of Turbine striker Anja Mittag. Potsdam are now five points clear of Duisburg and Frankfurt, though the latter have two games left to their rivals' three and Turbine could be champions on Wednesday if they win at bottom side Tennis Borussia Berlin and FCR do not beat VfL Wolfsburg.
