FCR 2001 Duisburg gained German Cup semi-final victory against 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam a week before the first leg of their UEFA Women's Champions League last-four encounter.
Reigning European champions Duisburg welcome Potsdam on Sunday before the return on 18 April, with Olympique Lyonnais and Umeå IK matched in the other semi-final, aiming to reach the 20 May decider in Getafe. Potsdam, winners of the 2004/05 UEFA Women's Cup, beat Duisburg 2-1 on 24 March to put themselves on course to defend the league title but German Cup holders FCR prevailed in the domestic knockout encounter thanks to Linda Bresonik and will face USV Jena in the final in Cologne on 15 May, hoping for a similar result to last year when they defeated Turbine 7-0 to lift the trophy.
Duisburg coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg said: "We were the better side but Potsdam were always dangerous, especially from set pieces. It was a very exciting game, though with only a few chances. This victory was psychologically important." Potsdam's Bernd Schröder conceded: "The result was deserved; we were below par. Also, FCR were clearly better in midfield."
Lyon welcome Umeå to Stade de Gerland on Saturday before travelling to Sweden eight days later and the French side, chasing a unique men's and women's European double, warmed up at the weekend by beating FCF Hénin-Beaumont 3-1 and are now within three points of leaders Paris Saint-Germain FC with a game in hand. However Umeå, hoping to reach a sixth European final and win a third title, began their 2010 Damallsvenskan campaign on Monday with a 1-0 defeat at newly-promoted Jitex BK.
