UEFA Women's Cup semi-finalists FCR 2001 Duisburg have strengthened for their challenging year ahead by signing Belgium captain Femke Maes.

Lyon challenge
The 28-year-old midfielder spent 2008 in Sweden with Djurgårdens IF having previously helped FCL Rapide Wezemaal to four Belgian titles and also played for Dutch side Willem II. She joins with the UEFA Women's Cup debutants preparing for their semi-final against Olympique Lyonnais on 28 March and 5 April, as well as being at the same stage in the German Women's Cup and holding fourth place in the Frauen-Bundesliga as they aim for their first league title since 2000.

'Experience and ability'
"I think I have found a club with a young, successful team with prospects," Maes said. "I want to play my part so their goals can be reached." A Duisburg statement added: "As we are still in three competitions with the UEFA Cup semi-final against Lyon, the German Cup and the fight for the league title, Femke will help us with her experience and her ability."
