Marta scores four
Arsenal, who beat two-time winners Umeå in the 2007 final, led 3-2 after last week's first leg but that advantage was wiped out within 14 seconds by FIFA Women's World Player of the Year Marta. The Brazilian striker added another before the break and completed her hat-trick straight after half-time. Hanna Ljungberg and Marta added further goals before Umeå keeper Ulla-Karin Rönnlund converted a penalty and next spring her side will take on Zvezda-2005 or Brøndby IF.
Instant strike
Marta scored virtually straight from kick-off in the home leg of Umeå's final defeat by 1. FFC Frankfurt in May and she repeated the trick today after latching on to a long pass from Anna Paulson. Arsenal put Rönnlund under pressure for the first of the half but the goalkeeper would not be beaten while Karen Carney and Jayne Ludlow both hit the woodwork. And on 44 minutes Marta, a late substitute in the away leg due to injury, pounced on the rebound from a Ramona Bachmann shot parried by Emma Byrne to double the lead.
Stroll to victory
The Brazilian, replacing Madelaine Edlund after her first-leg concussion, did not take long following the interval to complete her hat-trick as she outpaced the Arsenal defence. Ljungberg swiftly increased the lead and Marta then made it five. In the 72nd minute Marta was brought down in the Arsenal box by Faye White and Rönnlund stepped up to add a goal to her clean sheet. Umeå, whose domestic season is over with the league title retained, will discover their semi-final opponents on Thursday when Russian side Zvezda defend a 4-2 lead at home to Brøndby but their immediate focus will now be on Marta as she decides whether to stay in Sweden or join Los Angeles Sol in the new American professional league.
