Article body
The German champions 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam defeated Brøndby IF 2-1 in Germany tonight but bowed out of the UEFA Women's Cup on a 4-2 aggregate defeat as the Danish side marched on to the semi-finals.
Hansen opener
Brøndby were always in control of the tie after winning the first leg 3-0 a fortnight ago, and they strengthened their grip on the stroke of half-time at the Karl Liebknecht Stadion by taking the lead through Bettina Falk Hansen. That left Potsdam needing five goals to advance, yet they found the first of those four minutes after the interval as captain Ariane Hingst gave a 1,200 crowd a glimmer of hope.
Arsenal next?
That was the cue for Brøndby to man the barricades, and they stood firm until the final minute when Britta Carlson sealed a pyrrhic victory for the hosts. The Danish champions seem certain to face Arsenal LFC - 5-0 first-leg winners at Breidablik - in the semi-finals, with both clubs dreaming of becoming the first from outside Germany or Sweden to rule Europe at this level.
