Impressive Arsenal reach last four

Arsenal LFC will renew their recent rivalry with Brøndby IF in the last four of the UEFA Women's Cup after defeating Breidablik 4-1 in London to complete a 9-1 aggregate success.

Wealth of talent
The result of this tie was never in doubt after a second-half burst in Iceland ensured Arsenal were comfortable first-leg winners last week. The Gunners boast a wealth of English internationals and the questions now is whether the momentum gained from qualifying for the FIFA Women's World Cup can push the team on to become the first from outside of Sweden or Germany to win the UEFA Women's Cup.

Fleeting opener
That said, it was a Scot who opened the scoring tonight, Julie Fleeting adding to her double from last week. England forward Kelly Smith, among the favourites to be crowned FIFA Women's World Player of the Year in December, then took her tally for the tie to three as Arsenal went in 2-0 ahead at half-time. The visitors were next on the scoresheet before two more England regulars, Karen Carney and Rachel Yankey, wrapped up the win.

Wins shared
Arsenal are in Denmark for the first leg of their semi-final, a game likely to be played on 4/5 November with a return in England the following week. Lianne Sanderson scored the only goal as Arsenal defeated Brøndby in the second qualifying round on 17 September, revenge for the Danes' success at the same stage the previous season.

Favourites Umeå
Both clubs have reached the semi-finals once before, Arsenal losing 8-2 to another club from Denmark, Fortuna Hjørring, in 2002/03, and Brøndby going down 4-2 to Umeå IK 12 months later. The Swedes went on to win a second successive European crown that season and are in the hunt for a third this time as they square off against Kolbotn IL, the Norwegian conquerors of the holders 1. FFC Frankfurt.
