Valur back on top

Valur Reykjavík are celebrating their seventh Icelandic women's title, after claiming the championship back from 2005 winners Breidablik. Valur were crowned on Sunday after being awarded a 3-0 victory against FH Hafnarfjördur because the league's bottom side failed to play the match because of an injury crisis.

One defeat
Valar had been all but assured of the title going into the scheduled game with only a 30-goal defeat combined with a Breidablik victory possibly denying them. They won 13 of their 14 games over the course of the season, scoring 90 goals, with their only defeat coming at the hands of second-placed Breidablik. The two top meet again next Saturday in the domestic cup final.

Cup aim
"I am very pleased about the season," Valur captain Katrín Jónsdóttir said after lifting the league trophy. "Valur, Breidablik and KR [Reykjavík] all have similar teams and results between those three could have gone either way, but I think we deserved the trophy. The season is not over though, the cup final is still to come and we plan to win it too."
