Team guide: England

England qualified for their fifth straight finals with 11 wins in 12 games and 35 goals scored, Gareth Southgate saying his squad rose to "every challenge we've put in front of them".

Gareth Southgate, having succeeded former international team-mate Stuart Pearce in August 2013, guided England to their fifth consecutive Under-21 finals.

While they won all but one of their 12 matches, the Young Lions started the qualification campaign unspectacularly, picking up four points from unconvincing displays before hitting their stride. They then reeled off eight straight wins to top Group 1 by 12 points, and the play-off defeat of Croatia, beaten 2-1 home and away, merely boosted confidence still further.

"There are so many players who have played a part in getting us to the finals and every challenge that we've put in front of them they've risen to," said Southgate. "I'm very proud of the group of players and the group of staff who now have the finals to look forward to."

Appointed before the start of the 2013–15 campaign, Southgate signed a 12-month contract extension in January running until summer 2017. In 2006, aged 35, the former England defender had been named Middlesbrough manager, a role he left in October 2009 following their relegation from the Premier League.
