Luka Djordjević scored a first-half hat-trick for Montenegro, but Romania rallied to steal a march on their UEFA European Under-21 Championship Group 6 rivals.
Deian Boldor had headed Romania in front from a Mihai Bălașa flick on ten minutes, but on-loan UC Sampdoria forward Djordjević soon grabbed the limelight. He tidied up after Nebojša Kosović's 15th-minute shot came back off the bar, then collected a long ball to make it 2-1 on 33 minutes. The 20-year-old completed his treble in some style with a splendid shot from 18 metres with ten minutes to go until half-time.
However, there was still plenty of time for Romania to rally. Bălașa's excellent delivery from the right invited George Pușcaș to reduce the arrears with a 67th-minute header, and the classy Claudiu Bumba equalised from the spot (79) after being fouled by goalkeeper Danijel Petković. Florin Tănase then won the game with eight minutes remaining, finishing after Petković could not hold Alexandru Crețu's effort from distance.
