Moldova consolidated second spot in Group 1 of UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying with a 3-0 win against Lithuania.
Victory for Moldova – their fifth of the campaign – moved them on to 16 points, four ahead of third-placed Finland, who beat them on Sunday. Though section leaders England cannot be caught, Moldova still have hope of reaching the play-offs as one of the four best runners-up.
Alexandr Curteian's side secured the win in Vilnius courtesy of Nicolae Milinceanu's effort just after the half-hour and two second-half goals from Igor Dima. Milinceanu, who scored twice in the reverse fixture in Tiraspol in November, opened the scoring from the edge of the penalty area after a cross from the right. Dima finished off a fine counterattack to register his first midway through the second half, before adding a second from long range with five minutes left.
Moldova's final game is against England on 9 September. Lithuania, who have now lost five qualifiers on the spin, take on Gareth Southgate's team four days earlier, before concluding against Wales.
