Romania are still without a victory after three games in UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying Group 6 following a goalless draw with the Republic of Ireland in Piatra Neamt.
Though they adopted a cautious approach, Bogdan Stelea's side fashioned the first chance when Mihai Roman headed powerfully wide from Ștefan Popescu's left-wing cross. Ireland – who now have a win, a draw and a defeat to show for their endeavours – responded before the break through Derrick Williams and Sean Murray, the latter failing to score from close range after dribbling past four players.
With ten minutes remaining of the second period a pinpoint pass from Popescu found Alexandru Crețu, who teed up Martin Mădălin to shoot over the crossbar. Visiting goalkeeper Aaron McCarey then saved from Crețu as Romania – left with two points to Ireland's four – pushed for a winner.
