Horst Hrubesch, who oversaw Germany's UEFA European Under-21 Championship triumph in 2009, has replaced the man who succeeded him in the post, Rainer Adrion.
Adrion, whose contract ran until 2014, has parted company with the German Football Association (DFB) following a review into the team's disappointing performance at the recent European finals in Israel, where Germany were eliminated at the group stage.
Hrubesch took the side all the way in Sweden four years ago, culminating in a 4-0 victory against England in the Malmo final. A year earlier he had presided over Germany's UEFA European U19 Championship success in the Czech Republic.
"Taking care of the U21 side is a very interesting task, especially with goals like the 2015 European Championship in the Czech Republic and the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio," said Hrubesch, who left the role after the 2009 finals. "That was why I had no hesitation in accepting when Helmut Sandrock asked me on Thursday."
