Pot pleased with Dutch strength in depth

The first half wasn't so easy, but we played very well and we had a lot more of the ball. I think we deserved the half-time lead and then in the second half after the red card it was a little bit easier for us to play. We lost our concentration a little bit and they scored their goal, and I had memories of the last match against Germany when they got it back to 2-2. We had a little bit of panic, but we picked it up again and after we scored the third the game was over for Russia.

This is a very good birthday present [Pot turned 62 on Saturday] but in the end we want to become champions and that is the best present you can have. We are on our way now. This was a good result, I think we played a good match – not 90 minutes because that's impossible. Because we played like that they had to go back. We had 70% ball possession I think. We were playing from one side to the other – we tried to open the gates every time. But we played fantastic football for much of it.

Our game against Spain is a very important one yet again. I'm very happy with my substitutes as when they came on they showed they want to play and contribute. When they came on, they showed their quality and it shows we have 23 players we can rely on, not just 11.

We have been training to play more offensively and our game plan was to really go for it and score first. The Dutch started playing more carefully and we succeeded at certain things, but they scored first and after the sending-off, we should have really gone for it as a draw was no real use for us. Now we have to play Germany and we will try to do our best to finish on an optimistic note in this tournament.

I told guys that we need to bite the bullet; they have received good experience here. We have one more match against Germany. We don't play well against them at any level: youth, Under-21 or senior. That's why we want to organise ourselves well and go out with a bang. I'm happy with the contributions of Alan Dzagoev and Fedor Smolov. They added to our attacking armoury but the sending-off changed the way we used our substitutions.

Today maybe we felt we could beat them, perhaps we were too aggressive, and took too many risks and it is possible we made some mistakes but we have to analyse that. According to our judgement of our opponents, we made certain decisions but with hindsight those decisions can always look like bad ones.
