Italy are the most successful side in the history of the UEFA European Under-21 Championship and midfielder Luca Marrone stated that confidence is high of a sixth title as they limbered up before their trip to Israel.
Devis Mangia's squad conclude their preparations at AC Milan's Milanello training centre on Friday afternoon with a friendly against the youth side of AS Varese, the club where the Italy coach made his name. The mood is tangibly upbeat among the squad ahead of Wednesday's Group A opener against England in Tel Aviv, and Marrone – capped 31 times at U21 level – says featuring in this tournament is undoubtedly "a unique experience".
A Scudetto winner with Juventus in a season where he made his UEFA Champions League debut in the round of 16 against Celtic FC, Marrone added: "There is great enthusiasm among everyone, even those players who have already played for the senior national team or are used to big stages. We are aware that we have a good team, we are working hard, we are going to Israel with the dream of going all the way."
Games against Norway and hosts Israel follow the England encounter, but Marrone said: "The first game is always important, in order to send a good signal we will try to give 100%. We are fully aware that this tournament is an important showcase for our careers."
Marrone himself has a minor thigh injury, but said: "I'm fine. The leg is OK. I can ensure my contribution regardless of my role on the pitch, but most of all I want to repay the trust of our coach."
