Ben Sahar was part of the first ever Israel team to appear in a UEFA European Under-21 Championship finals in 2007. Now he is looking forward to a special summer on home soil as his country hosts the biggest football tournament in its history this June.
"I remember that for me and the whole team it was very significant, getting to the EURO for the first time as a youth team," Sahar told UEFA.com. A Chelsea FC player at the time, he scored a crucial goal in the play-off against France that helped Israel qualify for the event in the Netherlands six years ago. "For me, it was enormously important. There are still times at night when I dream of the moment I scored against France and we advanced into the EURO."
Enriched by the experience, he has some advice for this year's vintage. "Enjoy these moments, because who knows when you'll be in a national team again in such a tournament. It's a source of great pride to play for your country." While he has high hopes for Guy Luzon's "very talented" squad, Sahar is also looking forward to the tournament itself.
"When I'm asked about Israel and what the football is like there, everyone knows that it has improved," the Hertha BSC Berlin forward added. "Of course, they'll see that there are new stadiums. Personally, I hope it will be a good tournament and that everyone will enjoy it, including all the fans from abroad."
